Scope & limits
What this is. A study instrument built over openly-licensed primary sources — morphology-tagged Greek and Hebrew, the Septuagint, a variant apparatus, named grammar rules, and Calvin's Institutes — where every claim can be traced back to a citable edition. It is designed to be inexpensive to run and to make its own reasoning checkable.
What it is not.
- Not a critical edition. Our Greek running text is an NA-class text reconstructed from the TAGNT amalgamated apparatus. It is not NA28 — that edition is licensed by the Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft and is not reproduced here. Do not cite this text as NA28.
- Not a replacement for the standard lexicons. We ship Strong's (1890/1894) and Abbott-Smith (1922) with TBESH — public domain and CC BY. BDAG, HALOT, and TDNT are the scholarly standard and are not here, because they are commercially licensed. Lexical arguments meant to carry weight should be checked against them.
- Not a rival Bible translation. Scriptura Formal (SF) is our own formal-literal rendering, made chiefly so there is a text we can narrate end to end as audio. Anyone doing serious work should read their own preferred version — the reader is built to overlay one (e.g. ESV via API.Bible with your own key) precisely so SF never has to be in the way.
- Not peer reviewed. SF and our English Institutes have no editorial board and no external review. They are the work of this project, offered as such.
- Not a source of AI opinion. The assistant is confined to the corpus on this page and is required to cite it; it is not a general-purpose theological oracle.
Where AI is and isn't used. The original-language text, morphology, lexicons, Septuagint, and variant apparatus are third-party scholarly datasets — no AI produced or altered them. Grammar rules and cross-testament alignment are in-house computation, each citing the standard grammars. The one place machine translation is used is our English Institutes, disclosed in that section below.

No editorial board, no external review — read your own preferred version for serious work; the reader is built to overlay one. Follows the critical text, so verses absent from it are shown bracketed rather than skipped. Carries the STEPBible CC BY 4.0 attribution for its source text. |
Other translations (e.g. ESV via API.Bible) are never bundled with the app: they are fetched on demand with the user's own API key and displayed with the provider's required copyright line.
